Major Video Codecs Explained
H.264 (AVC): The most compatible codec. Plays on virtually every device made after 2010. Moderate efficiency. Best for maximum compatibility. H.265 (HEVC): 50% better compression than H.264 at the same quality. Excellent for 4K and HDR but has complex patent licensing. AV1: Royalty-free, best compression of any mainstream codec (~2.5ร better than H.264). Slow software encoding but growing hardware support. Used heavily by YouTube and Netflix. VP9: Google's royalty-free codec. Better than H.264 by about 30โ50%. Widely supported in browsers. Good YouTube codec. Apple ProRes: A professional intermediate/mezzanine codec for editing. Large files but extremely fast decode โ ideal for editing timelines. Avid DNxHD/HR: Professional broadcast intermediate. Alternative to ProRes in Avid and Adobe workflows. H.266 (VVC): The newest standard. ~50% better than H.265 but extremely slow encoding and very limited hardware support.
