About Video Bitrate Calculator
The Video Bitrate Calculator estimates the file size of any video based on its duration, video bitrate, audio bitrate, and container overhead. Use it to plan storage capacity, estimate upload times, and ensure your videos meet platform bitrate requirements.
What Is Video Bitrate?
Bitrate is the amount of data used per second of video, typically measured in Megabits per second (Mbps) or kilobits per second (kbps). Higher bitrate = higher quality = larger file size. Bitrate directly impacts visual quality โ too low results in compression artifacts; too high wastes storage.
Video vs Audio Bitrate
Video bitrate (Mbps) carries the picture information and accounts for the vast majority of file size. Audio bitrate (kbps) carries the sound. A typical HD video might use 8 Mbps video + 192 kbps audio. At 10 minutes, that's approximately 600 MB.
Container Overhead
Video containers (MP4, MKV, MOV) add a small overhead of 1โ5% for metadata, timestamps, and indexing. This calculator accounts for overhead so your estimate is accurate.
